If the Node.js version is too old, use nvm to manage versions:
1
2
3
4
|
curl -o- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nvm-sh/nvm/v0.39.0/install.sh | bash
source ~/.bashrc
nvm install 20
nvm use 20
|

|
# Global install
npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code
# Verify
claude --version

7
8
|
# Option 1: sudo
sudo npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code
# Option 2: change the npm global prefix (recommended)
mkdir -p ~/.npm-global
npm config set prefix "~/.npm-global"
echo 'export PATH=~/.npm-global/bin:$PATH' >> ~/.bashrc
source ~/.bashrc

# Never hard-code the API key — always use an environment variable
echo 'export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="sk-ant-xxx"' >> ~/.bashrc # ✅
# ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-xxx written in code # ❌
# Restrict file permissions
chmod 600 ~/.bashrc
# Check for leaks
grep -r "ANTHROPIC_API_KEY" --include="*.py" --include="*.js" .
